Pheew what a Scorcher!!!
Round 2 of the BRCA Truck National series was held at SHRCCC in Farnborough over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend and who said it always rains on Bank Holidays? The track was refitted over the winter with new Astroturf, elevation changes, man-made jumps and, on the right-hand side of the track a massive wall-of-death section. The club had laid a tight and twisty lay-out with plenty of grip available.
Practice started, as is the norm, Saturday at 12 noon, in dry sunny weather, with the temperature rising throughout the day. Sunday, competitors woke up to clear blue skies and the forecast of temperatures into the 30’s which is normally unheard of for May in the UK.
7 Heats of timed practice with 59 entries started promptly Sunday morning followed by four rounds of round-by-round Qualifying.
As is now the norm, qualifying would consist of four different classes of 1/10 electric truck. 2WD Short Course, 4WD Short Course, 2WD Stadium Truck and within that class 2WD Vintage/Rear Motor Stadium Trucks, in only their second year of their own championship, basically running to Iconic Revival regulations and limited to 10.5 turn brushless motors.
4WD Short Course qualification was taken by series Round 1 winner Eddy Rowland, 2nd overall was Dan Staite and 3rd on the grid would be Ben Baxter.
With 14 4wd’s the B Final was won by Oliver Swain winning all 3 legs, 2nd was Phil Birchall and 3rd Marc Biddas.
The A Final was won by Eddy Rowland with wins in all 3 legs, 2nd 3rd and 4th all had 5 points after the 3 finals, with tie breaks being the drivers fastest times in their best scoring final, Dan Staite would come 2nd, Shareef Qureshi would take third just in front of his fellow Eden Park Raceway stalwart, Ben Baxter in 4th. Top junior was Haidan Hicks finishing 10th overall.
2wd Short Course qualification was taken by the current 2wd Champion, Jaime Long, taking all four rounds, 2nd was former champion Simon Guant and 3rd another former champion James Moulds.
With only 11 entries in this class at this round, there would only be an A Final, Jamie took all 3 legs for the win, local hero Simon Hall 2nd and James Moulds 3rd, Top junior was Jamie Long too. Jamie was to a VERY good day at SHRCCC!
2wd Stadium Trucks Rear Motor, with 5 entries at this round, the race organisers listed them for qualifying all in the same heat, heat 4, so they all qualified against each other. Ben Baxter would qualify 1st, from Mike Mcleod, another EPR driver, second and Mark Ashforth third, in reality Ben would of qualified 18th in the modern class with his vintage Team Losi XX-T. In the finals, the vintage/rear motor trucks were also afforded their own finals, Ben would win all 3 legs with Mike 2nd and Mark 3rd. Hopefully we will see more entries at the upcoming rounds so these vehicles can continue to compete against each other.
Modern 2wd Stadium Trucks would have 29 entries, Defending Champion, Tony Bishop would qualify 1st after winning rounds 1,3 and 4, 2nd on the grid would be Keith Halsey and 3rd , double classing, would be Jamie Long, round 1 winner Kit Jones would line up 5th after a relatively difficult qualifying, behind Joe Cockill. Also there were 3 new, first time, class A finalists Adam Boffey, Daniel Hurrell and Rich Hipkiss
The C Final was a close run three legs, between the top 4, George Bancroft would take the overall win by taking Leg 3 in the fastest time from Andy Bird in second and Dave Griffiths 3rd.
The B Final was won by Charlie Hall with wins in Legs 1 and 3, Michael Halsey won the second leg and finished 2nd overall with Paul Steadman 3rd.
The A Final was won by Top Junior Jamie Long with wins in the second and third legs, Top Qualifier Tony Bishop would finish second and 3rd overall was Joe Cockill.
